Potomac River Cruise

The Potomac River carried George Washington's ferry between Mount Vernon and Alexandria a century before the capital city rose on its banks. By 1800, the river served as the surveyed boundary of the new federal district, its tidal basin and eastern branch shaping Pierre L'Enfant's grid.

Steamboat service linked Georgetown wharves to Chesapeake ports throughout the 19th century, while naval yards along the Anacostia arm built frigates and ironclads. Today the Potomac carries passenger vessels between four primary nodes: Georgetown's waterfront promenade, The Wharf district at Maine Avenue, Old Town Alexandria's historic seaport, and National Harbor's resort complex across the Maryland shore. The 950 Wharf Street terminal anchors the network, operating water taxi circuits and narrated sightseeing loops that pass within 200 meters of the Jefferson Memorial's south portico and the Kennedy Center's river terrace. Spring and autumn shoulder seasons draw the highest ridership, when Tidal Basin cherry trees frame shoreline views and late-afternoon light rakes across Memorial Bridge's neoclassical arches. Summer evening departures extend service until 20:00, aligning final runs with the Washington Monument's illumination sequence.

The waterway's navigable channel remains constrained by the 1930s seawall system and Roosevelt Island's wooded shoreline, which forces all commercial traffic through a single deepwater lane south of Key Bridge. Vessels serving the route range from open-air water taxis seating 90 passengers to enclosed sightseeing craft with climate-controlled cabins and upper observation decks. The Mount Vernon route extends 24 kilometers downstream, requiring 90 minutes each direction and passing Fort Washington's pentagonal ramparts on the Maryland bluff. Dinner cruise itineraries depart from The Wharf and Georgetown terminals, circling a 16-kilometer loop that returns passengers to their origin dock after two hours. Independence Day flotillas and October harbor festivals draw supplemental charter vessels, though the core water taxi schedule operates year-round with winter service reduced to weekend-only frequency between December and February.
